With her unparalleled technique and control of tonal palette, Ji Weon Ryu has recently been appointed Principal Flute of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. She also plays the same position in the Albany Symphony Orchestra and has performed in notable ensembles such as the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, New York String Orchestra, Princeton Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra (Symphoria) and Verbier Festival Orchestra. Throughout her career, she has worked with world-renowned conductors, including Christoph Eschenbach, Thomas Dausgaard, Valery Gergiev, Manfred Honeck, Fabio Luisi, Gianandrea Noseda and Tugan Sokhiev.
Since her soloist debut with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 12, Ji Weon maintains active solo career in the States and Korea.Admired for her “pure poetry” and “beautiful technique and sound” (NFA Chronicle), she has won First Prizes from the Artur Balsam Duo Competition, National Flute Association Soloists Competition, and New York Flute Club Competition. In 2018, she has been nominated to Harvard Music Association’s Artur W. Toote Award. Her recent solo engagement includes Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation’s Concert Series where her recital recording has been broadcasted by the premiere Korean classical radio station, KBS FM 1.
As a passionate chamber musician, Ji Weon is a founding member of Frisson Ensemble, a nine-piece chamber ensemble actively touring and reaching audiences all over the US. Select highlights of her performance with Frisson includes Debussy Syrinx at The Morgan Library and Museum and Mozart Flute Quartet at the Syracuse Friends of Music. Ji Weon has also appeared with various ensembles performing at the Lincoln Center’s Paul Hall, Caroga Lake Music Festival, and Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players. Highlights of 2019-2020 season include appearance at New Orleans Chamber Players and Stockton Friends of Music. As an ambassador of new music, she has been actively playing at a contemporary group, Ensemble Blank, which she co-founded in 2015.
In addition to her appearance on stage, Ji Weon enjoys teaching. She has taught as guest Teaching Assistant at The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, and Boston Flute Academy. Currently, she has small private studio in NYC.
Originally from Seoul, Korea, Ji Weon holds Master of Music degree in orchestral performance from Manhattan School of Music and both Bachelor of Music and Accelerated Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School.
